United Arab Emirates (Group B)

Updated: 2007-07-07 20:13

The United Arab Emirates will head into this year's Asian Cup full of
confidence after lifting the Gulf Cup for the first time in their history
last January, and Bruno Metsu's side will hoping for similar success in a
competition they have not been serious contenders in for over 10 years.

The UAE made their Asian Cup bow in 1980 but, disappointingly, did not
qualify from the group stage in their first three attempts.

It was a different story in 1992 when they lost in the semi-finals to
Saudi Arabia and eventually finished fourth, but it was just a taste of
things to come.
Four years later as hosts the Emriates made it into the final for the
first time before once again being undone by the Saudis, this time in a
penalty shoot-out.

But after failing to qualify in 2000, they fell at the first hurdle three
years ago in China, finishing bottom of Group B with only one point from
three matches.
They got the better of the Jordanians in the qualifiers for the 2007
edition as the UAE topped Group C with four victories, a draw and a
solitary defeat against fellow qualifiers Oman.

Learn mandarin - Vietnam (Group B)

Sports / Teams

Vietnam (Group B)

Updated: 2007-07-07 20:13

It has been a long wait for Vietnamese fans eager to see their side
compete against the cream of Asia in the continent's biggest football
competition.

While the South East Asian side has played at the first two editions of
the AFC Asian Cup, the 2007 tournament marks their first appearance in
the final round in 47 years.

A founder member of the Asian Football Confederation in 1954, the
Republic of Vietnam (or South Vietnam) participated in the inaugural
tournament in Hong Kong two years later, qualifying for the final round
after a 7-3 aggregate victory against Malaysia in the preliminary
competition.

Most of Vietnam's recent disappointments have come at the hands of
Thailand, who defeated the Indochinese side in the SEA Games finals in
1995, 1999 and 2001, and also accounted for them in the semi-finals of
this year's Asean Football Championship semi-finals with a 2-0 win in
Hanoi.

Vietnam's cause has not been helped by match-fixing scandals, the most
recent involving their under-23 side at the 2005 SEA Games. The incident
led to the arrest of four players including young star striker Pham Van
Quyen, who was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison and barred
from Vietnamese domestic football for four years.

But for all of their disappointments, coach Alfred Riedl and his team can
always count on the support of their passionate fans who, win or lose,
will fill the My Dinh Stadium.

Police carry out controlled explosion at Glasgow hospital

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-03 01:44

British police carried out a controlled explosion on Monday at the Royal
Alexandra Hospital near Glasgow, where a man arrested in the wake of the
attempted airport attack is being treated.

A man arrested at the scene of the Glasgow airport crash was taken to the
hospital on Saturday after suffering severe burns. The controlled
explosion is believed to be ignited in a suspect vehicle in the car park
of the hospital, Sky news reported.

Meanwhile on Monday, police arrested two more men over the foiled terror
attempts in London and Glasgow, bringing the total number of arrests to
seven.

The two, aged 28 and 25, were detained in connection with the car crash
incident at Glasgow airport, Sky news reported.

On Sunday, Mohammed Asham, a 26-year-old doctor from North Staffordshire
Hospital, was arrested in central Britain along with a woman dressed in
traditional Muslim dress, believed to be his wife.

Local police said the investigation is fast moving but still urged people
to be vigilant.

British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith on Monday briefed the House of
Commons on the development of investigations related to the terrorist
attacks of the past week, saying the government will continue to review
counter-terrorism measures and boost expenditure on fighting terror.

She highlighted the "measured response" from all quarters, urging no
speculation regarding the events.

A burning car was rammed into the main terminal building at Glasgow
airport in northern Britain on Saturday, one day after police in London
defused two car bombs packed with petrol, nails and gas cylinders in one
of the city's major shopping areas.

contaminated needle once every seven months, increasing the risk that
they will develop AIDS or hepatitis, US researchers reported on Wednesday.

Surgeons in a file photo. Surgeons in training are accidentally stuck
with a potentially contaminated needle once every seven months,
increasing the risk that they will develop AIDS or hepatitis, US
researchers reported on Wednesday. [Reuters]

Many do not bother to report it, the researchers said in the New England
Journal of Medicine.

If reported immediately and treated within 24 hours, the chance of
getting the AIDS virus following a needlestick from an infected patient
is almost zero, said Martin Makary of the Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine in Baltimore.

Half of the surgical residents failed to report such injuries to their
employee health center, usually saying they were too busy. Two-thirds of
the injuries were self-inflicted, often while putting in stitches.

Even when doctors were treating high-risk patients, they failed to report
the needlestick in 16 percent of the cases.

Male doctors, those who had been stuck frequently before, and surgeons
who knew that nobody else had seen them get stuck were the least likely
to report the incident, the researchers found.

Doctors "don't talk about it," said Makary. "There's no public reporting
system they're part of, no focus groups, no chat rooms. This is something
people keep to themselves and, understandably, they don't want the
stigma. There's some degree of humiliation involved" when you have to
acknowledge that you made a mistake.

And the treatment itself "takes a huge toll on someone, especially when
you're working 30- and 36-hour shifts routinely each week. It's a
stressful job, long hours, high responsibility," and the medicine you
have to take for a month to prevent illness produces nausea, said Makary.
"That's a bad combination."

He said the system puts surgeons in training at risk because "we tend to
put our most vulnerable and least-trained surgeons on the front lines of
battle" doing simple surgical procedures on the patients that are the
most likely to be infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and the AIDS
virus.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has tracked
thousands of needlestick injuries that are reported, and infection rates
vary. An estimated 0.3 percent of healthcare workers get HIV from a
needle stick and up to 30 percent are infected with hepatitis B after
such a stick.

Bayern sign 2006 World Cup top scorer Klose

MUNICH, June 26 - Bayern Munich signed striker Miroslav Klose from
Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen on Tuesday, taking their close-season
spending spree to around 70 million euros ($94.22 million).

Klose, top scorer at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, will take part in his
first training session as a Bayern player on Friday, the club said in a
statement.

The 29-year-old Germany striker joins for an undisclosed fee after Werder
agreed to sell him with a year left on his contract.

Klose is Bayern's eighth major close-season signing after they finished
fourth in the table last term, missing out on a place in the Champions
League.

The other new arrivals are Luca Toni, Franck Ribery, Ze Roberto, Jose
Ernesto Sosa, Marcell Jansen, Jan Schlaudraff and Hamit Altintop.

Bayern spent around 60 million euros to bring in those seven players.
While details of the deal with Werder were not disclosed, the club had
said they were prepared to pay around 10 million euros for Klose.

N.Korea plans to shut reactor in July

BEIJING - North Korea plans to seal its main nuclear reactor and source
of weapons-grade plutonium in the second half of July, Russia's Interfax
news agency reported on Monday, citing an unidentified North Korean
diplomatic source.

Korean peninsula during the Grand Celebration for National Unification in
Pyongyang June 17, 2007. [Reuters]

"To stop the reactor, it will take about a month according to our
specialists," the source said, Interfax reported.

"So we are counting on sealing it (the reactor) in the second half of
July, in accordance with the agreements reached at the six-party talks,"
the source said.

The report comes as North Korea said at the weekend it has invited UN
nuclear inspectors into the country as part of a deal reached in February
to shut down its Yongbyon reactor in exchange for aid.

South Korea has contacted at least two refiners to supply North Korea
with 50,000 tons of oil pledged to Pyongyang if it started to shut the
Yongbyon nuclear plant located about 100 km (60 miles) north of
Pyongyang, industry sources said in Seoul said on Monday.

"The ministry has already notified a number of refiners so that the
purchase could be made within this week," said a refinery source.

US and South Korean officials were encouraged by the developments and saw
a good chance for progress in the nuclear deal reached in February among
the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Hill upbeat on Six-Party talks process

US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill speaks at a news
conference June 18, 2007. [Reuters]
"This was an important weekend, ... this is an event we are looking
forward to," Hill told reporters before heading to the airport.

"Today I have completed some useful discussions with my Chinese
counterpart Wu Dawei and review on the six-party process," he said.

Hill would continue on to the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan for
consultations on when to start the next meeting of the talks on the DPRK
nuclear issue.

"Obviously, the bank issue took a long time, longer than many of us want
to see," Hill said.

He voiced his confidence in implementing the February agreement, saying
he still believed it was possible to make up the lost time and move to
the next phase of disabling nuclear facilities.

Iraq parliament speaker removed

BAGHDAD - Parliament voted Monday in a closed session to remove the
speaker after a series of scandals involving the controversial lawmaker,
legislators said. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani will be replaced by another Sunni
Arab, they said.

Iraqis gather around a burning patrol car in Samarra, 95 kilometers (60
miles) north of Baghdad, Monday, June 11, 2007. [AP]

The US military, meanwhile, said three American soldiers were killed and
six were wounded, along with an interpreter, Sunday when a suicide car
bomber brought down a section bridge south of Baghdad on Iraq's main
north-south artery.

"The efforts to clear the road continue," said Lt. Col. Randy Martin, a
US military spokesman.

Al-Mashhadani's behavior has repeatedly embarrassed the Sunni Arab
partners in Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's coalition government. Many
of the house's 275 legislators viewed his behavior as unbecoming and, on
occasion, erratic.

Three lawmakers said the Iraqi Accordance Front, parliament's largest
Sunni Arab bloc with 44 of the house's 275 seats, has pledged to offer a
replacement for al-Mashhadani within a week. They spoke on condition of
anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Al-Mashhadani, a former physician and an Islamist, is a member of the
Accordance Front and will retain his seat in parliament, according to the
decision. He did not attend Monday's session, which was chaired by his
deputy, Shiite Khaled al-Attiyah.

The speaker has been in trouble for sometime.

Last year, he barely survived a campaign by Shiite and Kurdish
politicians to remove him after he said Iraqis who killed American troops
should be celebrated as heroes. Last month, he slapped a fellow Sunni
lawmaker in the face and called him "scum" at the end of a raucous
session.

An incident on Sunday appeared to have been taken by lawmakers as the
last straw.

Al-Mashhadani got into a shouting match with lawmaker Firyad Mohammed
Omar, a Shiite Turkoman, when he complained to the speaker about what he
said was the heavy handedness of his personal security guards.
Al-Mashhadani responded by heaping abuse at Omar, who complained to
fellow legislators that he was also assaulted by al-Mashhadani's guards

The move came as Britain's next prime minister met with Iraqi leaders in
a surprise visit following promises to study his country's participation
in the conflict as it faces growing opposition at home. Treasury chief
Gordon Brown, who is to succeed Tony Blair later this month, was on a
one-day fact-finding mission, British officials said.

Meanwhile, engineers were at the scene of Sunday's suicide car bombing on
the bridge, using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to clear the
highway, Baghdad's main north-south artery, which was partially blocked
by debris from the overpass. An Iraqi interpreter also was wounded in the
attack, according to the statement that gave the casualty toll.

US armored vehicles provided cover fire from their cannons after the
bombing, which occurred in the area dubbed the "triangle of death" for
its frequent Sunni insurgent attacks.

The blast dropped one of two sections of the "Checkpoint 20" bridge
crossing over the north-south expressway, six miles east of Mahmoudiya.

It appeared that a northbound suicide driver stopped and detonated his
vehicle beside a support pillar, said Lt. Col. Garry Bush, an Army
munitions officer who was in the convoy, which also carried an Associated
Press reporter and photographer and arrived two minutes after the blast.

A US Army checkpoint and a tent structure, apparently a rest area, fell
into the shattered concrete. The crossing was believed to have been
closed to all but military traffic at the time.

Security guards with private security firm Armor Group International, all
ex-military, and others in a passing convoy rushed to the ruins. They
found a scene of confusion and worked with a US Army quick reaction force
for some 45 minutes to pull trapped men from the rubble, scrambling over
the fallen concrete.

"When that size blast went off, everyone was in shock," said one of the
first atop the rubble, Jackie Smith, 53, a former lieutenant colonel now
working as a civilian Army munitions expert.

He said he saw what he believed was the engine block of a truck
apparently what remained of the suicide vehicle.

Soon the outpost sergeant in charge was organizing a search for his
missing men, Smith said. The Armor Group team climbed up with first-aid
kits, stretchers and other aid.

With the Army's quick reaction force, they struggled to lift concrete
shards off the men, pinned along the slope of what was once a roadway. At
one point, a Bradley armored vehicle with a tow chain pulled a slab off a
pinned victim to free him.

Then a shout went up, "Morphine! Morphine!" and a black T-shirt-clad
Briton administered painkiller to the freed man.

"Another poor fellow looked crushed beneath a concrete slab," said Donald
Campbell, a 40-year-old from Inverness, Scotland.

During the rescue, US armored vehicles opened up with suppressing fire,
possibly having spotted movement in the surrounding countryside, flat and
baking in 100-degree-plus Fahrenheit temperatures.

Traffic was delayed for over an hour until a medevac helicopter landed to
take aboard the wounded, and traffic slowly resumed under the remaining
section of the span.

Iraqi police said the overpass was a vital link across the highway for
villagers in the area because the other spans have been taken over by US
forces. A police officer in nearby Iskandariyah, speaking on condition of
anonymity because of security concerns, said a curfew had been imposed on
vehicles and pedestrians after the attack and earlier bombings of a
mosque and a Sunni political party's headquarters that caused some damage
but no casualties.

In Baghdad, Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, whose forces control the area of the
bombing, spoke at length about US efforts to draw Sunnis into the
security forces.

"There are tribal sheiks out there who say 'Hey, just allow me to be the
local security force. I don't care what you call me. ... You can call me
whatever you want. Just give me the right training and equipment and I'll
secure my area.' And that's the direction we're moving out there," the
Third Infantry Division commander said.

In a meeting with reporters, Lynch said contacts with the Sunnis, who
make up the bulk of the insurgency, were a matter of pragmatism.

"They say: 'We hate you because you are an occupier, but we hate al-Qaida
worse and we hate the Persians (Iranians) even worse' ... you can't
ignore that whole population," Lynch said.

His division, he said, had lost 43 soldiers since the beginning of the US
troop surge on Feb. 14.

The deaths raised to at least 3,509 members of the US military who have
died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated
Press count.

BEIJING - The chief US envoy at North Korean nuclear talks warned Sunday
that shutting down DPRK's atomic program remains a far-off goal, but
welcomed the country's decision to invite inspectors.

A giant North Korean flag flutters on the top of a 160-meter (533-foot)
tower near the inter-Korean industrial park of Kaesong, North Korea, near
the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that
separates the two Koreas since the Korean War Saturday, June 16, 2007.
[AP]

The US official, Christopher Hill, said he hopes inspectors from the UN
nuclear watchdog can go to North Korea soon after the apparent resolution
of a dispute over millions in frozen funds that had stalled disarmament.

North Korea on Saturday invited International Atomic Energy Agency
inspectors to visit as the transfer of the money to its accounts neared
completion. In Vienna, IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said the
invitation had been received and that the "next steps" would be discussed
Monday.

"Obviously, it is a welcome step. It's got to be followed by a number of
other steps," said Hill, speaking to reporters on a trip to the Mongolian
capital of Ulan Bator. "Everyone has a lot of work to do in the days and
weeks ahead."

Hill is set to fly to Beijing on Monday to discuss a date for the next
round of six-party talks. He has said they are likely in early July.

He said he expects the IAEA delegation to leave soon for North Korea: "I
think they have been hoping to get this call."

North Korea said a "working-level delegation" from the UN nuclear
watchdog had been invited to discuss procedures for the verification and
monitoring of the Yongbyon reactor's shutdown. North Korea expelled IAEA
inspectors in December 2002.

Hill said the participants in the talks - the US, China, Russia, Japan
and the two Koreas - should now move to fully implement a February
agreement and the eventual denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

North Korea had refused to move on its February pledge to shut down the
Yongbyon reactor until it received $25 million in funds that were frozen
in a Macau bank. The US accused Banco Delta Asia of helping North Korea's
government pass fake $100 bills and launder money from weapons sales.

Claiming the financial freeze was a sign of Washington's hostility, North
Korea boycotted the six-nation talks for more than a year, during which
it conducted its first-ever atomic bomb test last October.

South Korea welcomed the latest developments, but also said it was too
early to celebrate.

"This is good news ... (but) this is not the time to get excited," South
Korean chief nuclear envoy, Chun Yung-woo, told The Associated Press.

South Korea plans to start shipping 50,000 tons of heavy fuel oil to
North Korea by the time its nuclear reactor is shut down, said Chun.

The North is to eventually receive further energy or other aid equivalent
to 950,000 tons of heavy fuel oil in return for irreversibly disabling
the reactor and declaring all nuclear programs.

"North Korea may bring up another issue to stall the progress like it has
done before," Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso cautioned. "We should
not swing between elation and desperation until the disarmament is fully
achieved."

authorities have taken a set of measures to clean up the exam

Jokes can't mask disagreements between Rice, Lavrov

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-31 14:09

POTSDAM, Germany - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice passed a note
to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a news conference, and
the two diplomats shared smiles and nods as he read what she had written.

Participants attend a news conference after a meeting of the
"Nahost-Quartetts" (Middle East Quartet) in Berlin May 30, 2007. [Reuters]

The familiarity - they offhandedly call each other Condi and Sergey - is
one part of a complex relationship between the senior diplomats for two
nations that are increasingly at odds.

Nicknames and jokes could not mask the disagreements between Rice and
Lavrov at a pair of international meetings in Germany. They traded
complaints and veiled warnings in public and had vigorous discussions in
private.

"I hope Sergey is right; I hope we have taken care of the North Korean
nuclear threat," Rice said with an edge of irritation in her voice during
a public exchange over a planned US missile defense shield against
threats from North Korea and other nations.

"I think it's a little early to declare victory on that one," Rice said.

Russia does not like the United States arranging missiles and
interceptors practically at its doorstep in Eastern Europe, no matter how
many times US officials say the system is not aimed at Russia.

Rice sounded exasperated at the dispute, which has escalated in recent
months as US-Russian relations soured on several fronts.

To make her point that the system is intended to guard against rogue
threats beyond Russia, Rice noted that Russia itself has claimed that its
nuclear missiles could "overwhelm, penetrate, destroy any shield that we
might build."

"We quite agree," she said.

Lavrov was not about to let her have the last word.

"I hope that nobody has to actually prove that Condi is right about
that," he said darkly.

Rice and Lavrov have known one another for years, talk often and usually
seem to enjoy their public appearances. Rice has said she admires Lavrov,
and compliments his English as better than her Russian. She also lets it
be known, however, that she does not back down during their closed-door
arguments.

Lavrov can be by turns courtly and condescending. His tone on Wednesday
was more threatening, as when the two sparred over the future status of
Kosovo at the same press conference.

Asked if Russia would consider using its right to veto on the UN Security
Council, Lavrov replied: "I hope that this won't be necessary and that
our partners will understand our arguments."

The direct language was riveting in a setting where bland, prearranged
statements are the norm, and Rice apparently wanted to lower the
temperature.

Peng Shuai, Golovin forced out from Roland Garros

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-05-24 09:56

Chinese prospect Peng Shuai and home star Tatiana Golovin have been
forced out from the French Open due to injury, the organisers announced
on Wednesday.

The 32rd ranked Peng, who would have been seeded at Roland Garros, pulled
out due to an injury to her left ankle. The 21-year-old also pulled out
at the Berlin Open early this month.

Germany's Angelique Kerber will take her place in the main draw.

17th ranked Golovin also had to bid farewell to the Grand Slam as she has
not recovered from bone bruising on the ankle. The French No. 2 will be
replaced in the women's draw by one of the lucky losers from the
qualifiers.

Swiss Martina Hingis has withdrawn from the French Open earlier due to
hip problem. The showpiece competition also loses Russian Zvonareva.

Learn Mandarin online - Bush names "war manager" for Iraq

WORLD / America

Bush names "war manager" for Iraq

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-05-16 08:30

Douglas Lute, director for operations, the Joint Staff, conducts a
Pentagon operational update briefing Feb. 9, 2007, in Washington. [AP]

Washington - US President Bush on Tuesday chose Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute,
the Pentagon's director of operations and a former leader of US military
forces in the Middle East, to oversee the fighting in Iraq and
Afghanistan as a war czar.

"General Lute is a tremendously accomplished military leader who
understands war and government and knows how to get things done," Bush
said, capping a difficult search for new leadership in the wars that have
defined his presidency.

It was a difficult job to fill, given the unpopularity of the war, now in
its fifth year, and uncertainty about the clout the war coordinator would
have. The search was complicated by demands from Congress to bring US
troops home from Iraq and scant public support for the war. The White
House tried for weeks to fill the position and approached numerous
candidates before settling on Lute.

In the newly created position, Lute would serve as an assistant to the
president and deputy national security adviser, and would also maintain
his military status and rank as a three-star general.

The White House has avoided the term "war czar." Bush called Lute the
"full-time manager" for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lute has been director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff since
September. Before that, he served for more than two years as director of
operations at US Central Command, during which he oversaw combat
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"He has already earned the respect and trust of the officials with whom
he will be working in his new role," Bush said.

The new job comes as administration tries to use a combat troop buildup
in Iraq to allow security and political reconciliation to take hold.

The White House has sought a war coordinator to eliminate conflicts among
the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies. Lute will seek to
cut through bureaucracy and deliver fast responses when requests come in
from US military commanders and ambassadors.

His addition will help Stephen Hadley, Bush's national security adviser,
who monitors hot spots around the world.

Bush's move is part of a lengthy reshuffling of war leaders. Yet critics
have questioned whether a new coordinator will help so late in the Bush
presidency or will instead add confusion in the chain of command.

Lute's appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

Until now, Hadley and other West Wing officials have tried to keep
turf-conscious agencies marching in the same direction on military,
political and reconstruction fronts in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the public's patience for the war has long eroded, and
lawmakers -- including members of Bush's own party -- are pushing a
harder line in ensuring that the Iraqi government is making progress
toward self-governance.

Anthony Cordesman, an Iraq expert at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies, said Lute comes into the job with a stellar
background in combat operation and agency coordination.

Yet the nature of the job poses an enormous challenge. Lute won't be able
to deal with civil agencies the way he did with military officers, and
his lack of budget authority or ability to reshape regulations could
limit his clout, Cordesman said.

"You really need strong leadership and planning from the ambassador and
from the commander in Iraq. They're the ones who have to interact with
the Iraqis," he said. "In effect, you're a czar in a support role to
field commanders and an ambassador 7,000 miles away."

A West Point graduate, Lute, 54, has had an extensive military career. He
fought in the 1991 Gulf War.

From 1998 to 2000 he commanded the Second Cavalry Regiment at Fort Polk,
La. He served next as the executive assistant to the chairman of the
Joint Chiefs for 14 months before joining the 1st Infantry Division in
Schweinfurt, Germany, as the assistant division commander. He also served
in Kosovo for six months in 2002 before being assigned to US European
Command in January 2003.

Jon Soltz, who leads an organization of veterans critical of
administration's war policy, said there is already a war czar -- Bush.

"The troops are now depending on Lt. Gen. Lute to do something the
President wouldn't -- listen to commanders who are telling him we need
more diplomacy, not escalation," said Soltz, an Iraq veteran and chairman
of VoteVets.org.

Retired Marine Corps Gen. John J. Sheehan was approached about the job,
but declined because he thinks that decision-making in Washington lacks
connection to a broader understanding of the region.

"These huge shortcomings are not going to be resolved by the assignment
of an additional individual to the White House staff," Sheehan wrote in
The Washington Post, explaining his reasons for not wanting to be
considered.

Drinking coffee can ward off diabetes

certain cancers, according to panelists discussing the benefits -- and
risks -- of the beverage at a scientific meeting. [Reuters]

NEW YORK - Drinking coffee can help ward off type 2 diabetes and may even
help prevent certain cancers, according to panelists discussing the
benefits -- and risks -- of the beverage at a scientific meeting.

"We're coming from a situation where coffee had a very negative health
image," Dr. Rob van Dam of the Harvard School of Public Health, who has
conducted studies on coffee consumption and diabetes, told Reuters
Health. Nevertheless, he added, "it's not like we're promoting coffee as
the new health food and asking people who don't like coffee to drink
coffee for their health."

Van Dam participated in a "controversy session" on coffee at the
Experimental Biology 2007 meeting underway in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Lenore Arab of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA also took
part, presenting results of a review of nearly 400 studies investigating
coffee consumption and cancer risk.

There's evidence, Arab noted, that the beverage may protect against
certain types of colon cancer, as well as rectal and liver cancer,
possibly by reducing the amount of cholesterol, bile acid and natural
sterol secretion in the colon, speeding up the passage of stool through
the colon (and thus cutting exposure of the lining of the intestine to
potential carcinogens in food), and via other mechanisms as well.

However, Arab did find evidence that coffee may increase the risk of
leukemia and stomach cancer, with the case for leukemia being strongest.

The findings suggest that people who may be vulnerable to these risks --
for example pregnant women and children -- should limit coffee
consumption, van Dam noted in an interview.

He and his colleagues are now conducting a clinical trial to get a
clearer picture of the diabetes-preventing effects of coffee, which were
first reported in 2002. Since then, he noted, there have been more than
20 studies on the topic.

Van Dam and his team are also looking for which of the "hundreds to
thousands" of components of coffee might be responsible for these
effects. It's probably not caffeine, he noted, given that decaf and
caffeinated coffee have similar effects on reducing diabetes risk.

His top candidate, van Dam says, is chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that
slows the absorption of glucose in the intestines.

Kirilenko, Jazz win to force Game 7

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-04 15:22

Andrei Kirilenko shadowed Tracy McGrady all night. Now he'll be following
McGrady back to Houston, too.

Kirilenko easily had his best game of the first round with 14 points and
five blocks to lead the Utah Jazz to a 94-82 victory over the Rockets on
Thursday night, tying the series and forcing a Game 7 Saturday in Houston.

"We kept it alive," said Kirilenko, who hadn't scored more than eight in
the first five games. "I think it's a great performance by everybody."

Carlos Boozer scored 22 and Mehmet Okur added 19 points as he finally
started hitting his 3-point shots, making four and matching his total for
the first five games.

Yao Ming #11 of the Houston Rockets looks for a shot over Andrei
Kirilenko #47 and Matt Harpring #15 of the Utah Jazz in the fourth
quarter during Game Six of the Western Conference Quarterfinals during
the 2007 NBA Playoffs at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City,
Utah. The Jazz tied their first-round series against the Rockets at three
games each with a 94-82 victory.[AP]

"I don't give up. If I'm open I'm going to take it," Okur said.

Kirilenko was exhausted after trying to keep up with McGrady. The
Rockets' superstar still scored 26 points, but nine came from the foul
line as Kirilenko and the rest of the Jazz pretty much shut down every
route to the basket.

Utah didn't let McGrady get much easy scoring and the Rockets fell to 0-3
in playoff road games. Yao Ming added 25 points, but he also had eight
turnovers -- two more than his rebound total -- as Okur and rookie Paul
Millsap constantly pressured the 7-foot-6 center.

The rest of the Rockets besides McGrady and Yao combined for 31 points.
Houston finished with 19 turnovers.

"Our guys were fighting for our lives," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

McGrady has never made it to the second round of the playoffs. After
Houston won the first two games of the series, the Rockets appeared on
their way there, but have not been able to find their way out of Utah
with a victory.

The home team has won every game in the series, which bodes well for the
Rockets. That was about all the solace Houston had after cutting an
11-point lead to one twice but never quite completing the rally.

"It was right there for us, man. Down to one point," McGrady said. "We
put ourselves in great position to pull this game out, but things went
the other direction."

Deron Williams had 15 points and eight assists and rookie Paul Millsap
scored all of his eight points in the second quarter, as the Jazz took
control and then held off several rallies by the Rockets down the stretch.

The home team has won every game in the series, which bodes well for the
Rockets as they prepare for Game 7 Saturday night at home.

"They just put a lot of pressure on us and just made everything tough,"
McGrady said.

Kirilenko scored six points and blocked three shots in the fourth
quarter. McGrady tried to drive on him once with the Rockets down three,
but Kirilenko stayed on him and swatted the ball away during a 13-4 run
that sealed it for the Jazz.

"We had a game we had to win or we were going home," Kirilenko said.
"That's hard to play with this kind of intensity on both ends of the
court, but we had to win."

Kirilenko got a layup to roll over the front of the rim and in and added
a 21-foot jumper during Utah's late run. Yao dunked to get the Rockets
within 81-76, then the Jazz answered with a jumper by Williams, two free
throws by Boozer and a 3-pointer from Okur, who went 4-for-7 from beyond
the arc.

"They outplayed us down the stretch. We've just got to get on the plane
and figure out a way to play a little bit better," Houston coach Jeff Van
Gundy.

Okur had made just four of 25 3-pointers in the first five games.

Okur was intense all night and it showed in the second quarter, when he
took a hard foul from Juwan Howard. Okur got Howard in the air, then went
up for a shot as Howard was coming down with a forearm.

Okur crashed hard to the floor and came up almost swinging. Instead he
nudged Howard and got in his face before the two players were separated.
Howard was called for a technical and was livid. He got right in referee
Dick Bavetta's face and was yelling, but he was pulled away in time to
avoid a second technical.

Okur made all three free throws to put Utah up 36-35. Utah led 46-43 at
halftime.
