Yiwan -

I think it's wrong to say Laowai to your face. It's pretty much like saying Chinese to address me
when I have a name or title or whatever. And yes kids, especially those of x-generation are way
too spoiled. Their parents have gone through all the hardship during the cultural revolution
period therefore are so determined to give their kids the best, especially when they only have one.

Maybe you should look outside Shanghai. The pictures linked in this post are not atypical.

Perhaps Miffy's desire to "help the homeland" is not for everyone. Your choice to help KFC
increase their profit margin is commendable, but doesn't make Miffy's desire 'misplaced'.

When I was living in Beijing, Chinese used to yell "laowai" at my boyfriend and me when we walked
down the street sometimes. We spoke a fair amount of Chinese by the time we left, but we could
never get our Chinese friends to tell us exactly what laowai meant. Can anyone give me a good
translation (I know I sound dumb for asking but I can't seem to find it in a dictionary either.)

Also, the term "guizi", does this just mean devil or something? I know basic Mandarin but I was
never taught insults by my teachers lol.

Lu -

Guizi means devil, yang guizi is foreign devil, hei guizi black devil, Riben guizi Japanese devil.
In some areas of China this is the word of choice for foreigners. Personally I object to being
called guizi/devil, to me (and many other foreigners) this is just plain insulting.

Laowai is a less insulting word for foreigner, and many Chinese will use it with no bad intentions
at all, while others will use it to mock. Some foreigners strongly object to it, some don't mind
at all. When people yell it at you when you're walking down the street, it's just plain rude.

The neutral term, accepted by virtually all foreigners, is waiguoren 外國人. More polite, if
you're talking to or about a specific foreigner, is 外國小姐 or 外國先生, or if the
person's foreignness is of no consequence whatsoever, just 小姐/先生.

aimei -

Thanks! Do you know what the tones on guizi? Is it gui4zi?

imron -

鬼子 - guǐzi

monto -

Laowai : 老外

In most cases, it means 外国人(foreigner) with mood ranging between joking and mocking. It is
considered impolite to say it before a foreigner you don't know. It quite normal to foreign friend.

Occasionally, 老外 means 外行(layman) as in:

你老外了吧,你。= 你外行了吧,你。

Consider -

"我是北京一家[著名的]烹飪學校的主廚。"

which translate to "I am the chef cook of a [famous] cooking school in Beijing."

I am not sure if "Beijing" is the name of the school. If it is, then it should be
"我是[著名的]北京烹飪學校的主廚。"

I put "famous" in brackets because one doesn't usually flatter oneself by telling people that his
company is famous.

Does anyone have any information regarding this for University exchange?

seems to be a lot of maybe Peking facilitated Chinese programs but any genuine
University/non-American war profiteering ones?

myann23 -

I'm planning on returning to Dalian and studying at the TLI there this summer but these tighter
visa restrictions have me a little worried. From what I hear, if I study at a Chinese university
then I should be fine - bring paperwork to the consulate and should be okay. In the case of TLI
though it's a private language school so I'm not sure if they would be able to grant a X visa -
actually I'm pretty sure because Xander mentioned that TLI Dalian issued him an F visa, which is
normally for business

In his case, it was approved but these new regulations I heard were targeting the F visas, making
them a lot harder to obtain. If I try to get an F visa with TLI claiming I have some business
stuff to do in China, do you think I could still get the visa these days? I'm looking at a 6 month
visa, single entry is fine.

Also, after I finish my studies I hope my Mandarin level is good enough to start my job in
Beijing. Do you think I should go through my company rather than TLI to get a visa? I wouldn't be
officially working yet, but because I'd be learning Mandarin, that in itself is kind of
work-related. Would it be easier to get a visa through my company and then use that visa time
period to study?

THANKS for anyone willing to share info!!

Mike, if I was you, I would do my best to secure an X visa, no matter what. Story now is to get an
F visa, you pretty much need a bunch of documentation like a roundtrip plane ticket, accomodation
(I think) and most importantly a stamped official invitation from a Chinese gov't ministry. If TLI
can't get you an X, you might have to go elsewhere to do it.

I applied for a multi entry F (from HK) with my business supporting me, a bunch of documents and
everything, and all I got was a multiple entry 6 month, L visa (tourist) with 30 day stay limits.

Of course F visas are still officially available according to the jargon, but the new regulations
are not very clear. In other words, no one knows whats going on. Best to ask groups like AmCham
and others...

How are things back home?

Great feedback, thanks a lot.

In addition, can you take some other courses that have nothing to deal with chinese in BNU? I am
thinking of continuing japanese at that time.

I presume the course I should take is "Language Students and General Advanced Studies Students "
http://www.bnulxsh.com/newapplication/Tuition-en.htm

Is there anyone else who took a different one please?

Jamoldo -

I'm sure taking Japanese should be no problem, but I'm the wrong person to ask. Best to probably
ask the Foreign Students Office, or better yet find out from a local student/your teacher who to
get in touch with...

And yes you should apply as a Language Student.

orangutan -

I think you should be aware that you have to work your arse off to keep up with the classes at
BNU. You will have a reading and writing class (learn about 60 words a week), speaking (45 words a
week), listening (25 words), and newspaper reading (30 words). And that's just the words in the
new word lists in the text book. On top of that, you will probably have to look up lots of other
words to understand the texts we study - plus you will have homework to do for reading and writing
class and newspaper reading. I would be surprised if you have much time for Japanese as well. Even
the Koreans in my class aren't really keeping up with it all any more. It's a great place to
improve your reading and writing very quickly!

gaikokujin -

Great feedback Orangutan, thanks a lot.

May I ask you which level you are referring to in your description please?
It looks very serious and demanding, which is what I am expecting.
Concerning the Japanese, I just wanted to see my options, having just regular chat with the mates
are another option as well.

Cheers,
Gaikokujin

orangutan -

I am in 102 but I think you will find 201 has the same subjects and workload. I would have thought
you would be in one of these two levels if you've reached HSK level 3. I'm sure the workload at
the other levels is heavy too, although the exact subjects they study may be different (100 and
101 don't have newspaper reading, for example).

Jamoldo -

I'm in 201 now and getting my butt kicked since I skipped 102. I hear they are very similar but
sitting in a 102 class, there's quite a bit difference between the levels of the students.

extrapages -

HAHAHA! I can't be TOO sure... BUT I think I passed the finals and got into 101.
I could be wrong though. I should really get to campus and check. HAHAH!
Next semester is SO going to kick my ass. I'm so excited... I think I might pee my pants.

cliveloughlin -

hi there

anyone know of any cheap hotels that host foreigners near to beishida? i have a friend coming in a
few weeks and want to find him a place close to me...(no space in my shed, the sofa's occupied
with books and dirty clothes)....

cheers
clive

roddy -

Yes, but I can't remember the name. Come out of the west gate, and walk south, crossing under the
big rainbow thing and it's on your left. It's one of those cheap and cheerful chain places, but I
think it's got good reports on here. If you come past Jindian Huayuan you've gone too far, or its
closed, or I've imagined it.

Quest -

Is it a name?
王 (wang/wong): surname; king; leader
冬 (dong): winter

mikew2069 -

I don't think it's a name but I have no idea. Her maiden name was Chein if that helps...

renzhe -

Yeah, it's Wang Dong, probably her name.

mikew2069 -

Thank you so much.. So does that name have a meaning?

mikew2069 -

Oops, I didn't realize the second post (Quest) had definitions. Thanks Quest.

But why would her name mean "King Winter"? Why not Queen or something more feminine? Could these
symbols possibly mean anything else, or is this pretty black and white?

Thanks again for your help.

imron -

Wang (King) is the surname.
It's pretty black and white.

Lu -

Wang Dong looks like a name, surname Wang, given name Dong (which means winter).
But the OP says his mother's maiden name is Chen (I assume Chein is a typo). Or is her married
surname Wang (or Wong)?

renzhe -

王 (wang) is a very common last name. While the character means "king", surnames are basically
surnames and don't imply anything about the person. Stephen King is not a king, it's just his last
name.

冬 (dong) means winter.

There are several things to consider -- depending on where your mother is from, she may have
dropped her maiden name when marrying. She may also have spoken a Chinese dialect other than
Mandarin -- the pronunciation people are giving are all standard Mandarin pronunciation. A
Shanghainese, Cantonese or Taiwanese speaker would pronounce these characters differently. The
meaning would still be the same.

The only thing that's sure is that the characters are 王 and 冬, and that they look like a name.

I guess I'm not native speaker then. Because I use 不是 bu4shi4 all the time, esp over
telephones and have the desire to be clearly heard. It's not that difficult for me to pronounce.
In fact I specifically use bu4shi4 when I correct and advise someone. bu2shi4 to me sounds
sometimes quite condescending or impatient (like recoiling).

sm_sung seems to agree with me.

I don't think it's official though. But it's certainly common enough to be allowed in society. And
who complains when a Beijing anchor pronounces Wen Jiabo as Ven Jiabo?

Same here. I only pronounce 不是 as bu2shi4 when I'm trying to emphasize the 不 portion of the
clause, which is often unnecessary. So far, people seem to understand me just fine.

zackzhou and galitonwu, you seem to be native mandarin speakers. Do you follow the
不+[第四声](fourth tone) ------------------>bu2+[第四声] rule without any exceptions?

Never heard of it in my life ,and I wouldn't be able to understand it in most contexts.

You never noticed.

In southern parts of China (and Taiwan), you hear bu4 shi4 in various circumstances. And no, I
disagree that you wouldn't understand if I said bu4 shi4. bu4 shi4 is also the official dictionary
entry, as Beijing's tone sandhi rules are not incorporated.

BeijingSlacker -

Would you paste the dictionary entry here. I mean the part that explicitly says its pronounced
"bu4 shi4"

Even though there is such an entry in some dictionary, I would still suggest Chinese learners go
with bu2 shi4 coz thats how most native Mandarin speakers pronounce it. Have you ever heard any
CCTV news announcer saying bu4 shi4?? I tried bu4 shi4 a couple of times and it was just so
awkward. I am positive if they had ever said it that way, I would have noticed and remembered.

I hate to say this and I am sure you hate to hear this, but how people pronounce this word in some
southern areas doesn't really matter. Whats a standard for, eh?

No offense at all. I dont mind hearing people speak accented Mandarin at all, as long as the
meaning can come across, but our discussion here is for educational purposes.

Maybe that's because you don't remember hearing it, because it was a rather unimportant detail. Do
you run into great difficulties when trying to understand Taiwanese Mandarin?

Quote:

There's no such thing as a "native Putonghua speaker". It's an invented standard based on the
Beijing dialect. I'm sure you've noticed the difference between Beijinghua and Putonghua.

Quote:

As I've mentioned earlier, I use bu2 shi4 only to emphasize 不. I tried using bu2 shi4 all the
time and it was just so awkward.

No offence to you too, but, in my experience, this response is very typical of Beijingers. If many
Southerners(as a whole, not just one or two dialect groups) pronounce 不是 as bu4 shi4,
shouldn't it be accepted as standard usage too? After all Putonghua is supposed to be a national
language, not a regional dialect.

It's very natural for spoken languages to differ slightly in different areas. For example Mary,
marry, merry may be pronounced in the same way or differently depending on where you are. Formal
written language however, is usually standardised.

There's a reason Putonghua was chosen as the only written standard. If I wrote Chinese in the
Fujian dialect you would find it very odd (though you might still understand it).

For example:
福建話:汝食好未?
普通话:你吃好了吗?

BeijingSlacker -

The marry/merry anology doesn't hold here coz internationally there isn't a standarded English
system all the native speakers agree on.(well, SA and RP are far less applied than Putonghua.)
Brits, Aussies, Canadians, Americans..... Their accents are comprehensible to each other so there
is no point of having an international standard.

Again, I think its perfectly ok for anyone to speak any accents/dialects. I dont understand the
sentence you wrote, nor any Fujianese words, but I definitely support preservation of Fujianese,
Cantonese, Sichuanese....whatever-ese. However, when it comes to one particular language,
shouldn't we have a standard? I guess if anyone was to learn Fujianese, you wouldn't suggest he
learn some Cantonese--accented Fujianese. I guess you wouldn't like it if I was to walk around
telling people to go with the accent way I pronounced some Fujianese word which I learned as a
second language.

Remember there are two meanings of "dictionaries" in China.
A character dictionary and a word dictionary.
字典Character dictionaries focus on characters and how it forms with other characters, but
mainly on the characters themselves.
词典Word dictionaries focus on word entries and the words' menaings and usage and pronunciation.

新华字典(新华)Xinhua "New China" Character Dictionary lists 不 simply as bu4,
不错bu4cuo4, 不是bu4shi4.

现代汉语词典(现汉)Modern Chinese Word Dictionary lists all 不 preceding a 去声departing
tone character as bu2, 不错bu2cuo4, 不是bu2shi4.

I wanted to tell people about the book I am reading. It is by 易中天, who people probably know
is currently very popular in China. He is a professor at Xiamen University whose TV shows and
books are lapped up, and every street corner, in Kunming anyway, is selling his books. One is
called 闲话中国人 (gossiping about, or informally discussing, Chinese people). He explains in
the preface that his aim is to create a new type of academic work, one that is academically
robust, not dumbed down, but written in colloquial Chinese, almost like a conversation, not in
stuffy academic language. So the book itself is very chatty in style. There are 9 chapters on
every aspect of Chinese culture, incl food and drink clothes, love, friendship, "face", the work
unit, the family etc. He is aiming to explain, not just what Chinese culture is, but why and how
it developed the way it did.

I have his 品三国前传:之汉代风云人物, which is about the Han dynasty. One of the
many books I’ve started but haven’t finished yet.

It’s really incredible how big he is on the Mainland right now.

djwebb2004 -

I want to give an update on this. Although in the preface he says he will have a chatty style, it
turns out that Yi Zhongtian's books are rather difficult to read even for Chinese people!! My
chinese friends say he likes to "摆样子" and that is why. There are about 30 chengyu per page,
and many discussions of historical stories and lines from poems etc. And there are even his own
concocted sentences in wenyanwen ending in "ye". I am embarrassed to say that say I generally look
up 30 words per page for this book ,and 60 is not unknown either. I am one third of the way in the
book owing to my laziness. But some of the chengyu are absolutely great.

Kick the bucket 一命呜呼
A piece of cake 小菜一叠

Anyway, this is the hardeest book in modern Chinese I have seen...

xianu -

sounds like it could be an interesting or at least linguistically helpful read. Anyone know where
to get it in the states?

xianu -

BTW, I just looked him up at Nanhai in california, and found that there will be an event, I guess
with him speaking at the San Mateo Marriot on April 22. http://nanhai.com/store//product348.html

Quote:

joyo.com and dangdang.com both ship to the U.S., I think. I've personally only had delivery from
joyo.com. The shipping probably costs more than the books, but since the books are at PRC prices
-- very, very cheap, that is -- it's worth it.

roddy -

Picked this up over the weekend as I was in a bookshop, didn't really know what to buy, and
recognized it as having been mentioned on here so I figured even if I hated it I could come on
here and say so.

Didn't get very far into it, but I agree that it isn't the easiest to read. There are lots of
references to historical stories / events, and they really are just references, not descriptions.
Which means if you don't know them already, they're just going to leave you wondering. Needless to
say, I don't know them already. Also, the chapter on food, and I suspect the entire book, has lots
of 'Western people blah blah blah, while Chinese people blah blah blah' stuff, which generally
appears to be nonsense. I can't remember anything from inside the book, but the back cover claims
that Chinese people are more suited to using chopsticks as they are introverted, and Westerners
knives and forks as they are extroverted, and that seems to set the tone somewhat.

That said, I'm not very far in, so maybe I'm judging to early. Not sure I'll get much further
though . . .

I am trying to find a rather comprehensive source of words to describe movies, books and tv shows
- words like romance, horror, adventure, sci fi, etc. I have googled and found some sits but they
were lacking considerably. There also was some contradiction in the words they used, so I just
tossed the sites and moved on.

I wouldn't throw out those sources just because of a few contradictions. Those contradictions may
reflect actual usage. For example, fantasy books are often listed as science fiction in English.
Of course it's better to use the word "fantasy", but it's useful to know that fact.

You might find browsing Douban helpful. The tags are all user generated so they can be a bit

Incidentally, the Last Temptation of Christ is listed on Verycd under disaster movies. Which in a
way, I suppose, it was.

Someone committed suicide just because his daughter didn't have a chance to see her idol Andy Lau.

A 29-yr old girl, Ms Yang, from Lanzhou who said she started seeing Lau in her dream since she was
16, has quitted school since then and started full time dreaming to be a fan of Lau.

Her retired parents, who lived on meager pension, also followed their crazy daughter's wish.
During the last 13 years, they sold the house, father's kidney, blood,....and had spent RMB110,000
to go to Beijing three times and Hong Kong two times for the sake of just attempting to have their
daughter meet with Lau.

Last week they came to HK again. Their daughter finally had a chance to meet Lau, chat with Lau
and pose with Lau in Lau's fan club during a fans' gathering.

However, the Yang family still considered it inadequate. Two days ago after they almost spent
their last dime, they were dozing in the 24-hr open McDonald at Tsimshatsui in the night time.
When the mother and the daughter woke up in the middle of the night, they found their father was
missing. Later the father's body was found drowned in the water of the Victoria Harbor.

The deceased father had left his last words. He wrote that Lau should be responsible for his
family's mishap because so far Lau has refused to grant a meeting with his daughter exclusively.

Even Andy Lau is so popular in Mainland China, I was stunned to hear the news that Lau was
forbidden to learn the famous technique of Sichuan Opera -- Face Change.

Face Change is actually mask change performed by the Sichuan Opera actos. The best opera master
can change the mask over a dozen times in a minute without any traces.

Moreover, that technique will vanish because only a few old masters still know such trick.

For the sake of learning this technique, Lau kowtowed to an 80+ years old master and had him as
his instructor. But all his effort was in vain when the Provincial Cultural Bureau stepped in.

The reason given by the Provincial Cultural Bureau was really funny:

"Face Change" is a national treasure and cannot be propagated outside China.

But at the time Lau tried to learn it, it was already post-1997 and Lau is undoubtedly a Chinese

Who led Mr. Yang to his death?

It is not Lau. In fact, Lau has already criticized Ms. Yang's behavior as
「不正確、不正常、不健康、不孝」 (incorrect, irregular, unhealthy and unfilial).

It is the Mainland media who killed him. Last year a lot of Mainland media including 蘭州晨報,
中央電視臺《社會與法》, 南方都市報、東方衛視以及央視《共同關注》
flocked in droves to Lanzhou to widely report Yang family's erratic behavior.

And 蘭州晨報 (Lanzhou Morning News) even bragged on how other Mainland media followed their
suit in reporting about this crazy family:
“全國絕大多數城市強勢媒體都已轉載了本報對癡狂‘追星女’的連續報道
並對本報長期以來對弱勢群體的愛心和幫助,給予了肯定和讚揚。”

Translation:

(The absolute majority of most media in the cities have excerpted our continuous coverage on this
"super fan". And these media affirmed and applauded on our newspaper's long term care and concern
of under-privileged group.)

The Lanzhou Morning News and other media are really sick in regarding such crazy fan as
under-privileged group!!!

After the death of Mr. Yang, you guess what happened?

You can't believe it.

Ms. Yang and her mother were surrounded all day by 30+ reporters from Mainland, HK and Taiwan. Ms.
Yang cursed Lau for causing her father's death and used all dirty words to depict Lau. However,
Ms. Yang said that she still wanted to meet Lau. When the reporter asked her why she still wanted
to see Lau since he was such a scum, Ms. Yang got mad and yelled that it was his father's death
wish!

Just five hours before their visas expired, they finally got on a bus and crossed the border.

But......what about her father's corpse?

Ms. Yang said that since they are broke, they don't care. They say they will let HK government
handle the corpse -- be he cremated or buried -- she doesn't even go to the morgue to see her
father for the very last time. And she don't even want to take the ashes after cremation back home!

Xiao Kui -

If I were that girl, I don't know how I'd live with myself. Losing a father who loved me enough to
make that many sacrifices for me because of my stupid fantasy and irrational obsession. I can't
imagine how guilty she must feel, even though she pretends to blame Lau, I only hope she doesn't
follow in her father's footsteps - to eventually heal from sth like that and get on with one's
life would be a far greater triumph than meeting a celebrity.. . .

Her life has really turned tragic at a young age - it seems like emotional problems must have run
in the family. Maybe I'm silly, but I sort of do admire their determination, but it seems like
they could have been successful had they been more patient and pursued her goal in a rational way.

To me the suicide seems sort of like the easy way out for someone who feels as though he's failed
his daughter and doesn't have anything to return home to except debts.

For some families, the adventure of doing all that just to meet Lau, would have been enough, an
adventure in and of itself. I hope we don't hear another story like this any time soon.

Some hongkong reporters said that she's been paid by many mainland media. Among them, Netease, a
big internet portal in China, attempted to "quarantine" the floor in the hotel she lived and
blocked other "unauthorized" media from interviewing with her.

As quoted, a reporter from Netease said "I'm tired of it, and want all these end shortly! Now what
we're doing is to take her back to hong kong, bring it to a climax and then that's the end."

====================================================================================================

I saw this film today. It is Jay Chou's debut as director. There is nothing special about the
film, not the story, not the acting, not the images; but I like it immensely. It is such an
ordinary film, but at the same time very likeable. I think it has to do with the chemistry between
Chou and the leading actress, and their playing the piano throughout the film. And the ending is
'deadly' romantic.

I think Chou always looks very vulnerable, both in this film and in 黃金甲.

Watching this film I kept saying to myself, "嘩周杰倫真不得了". He plays a highschool
student quite convincingly IMHO. And the film has that typical sweet and pure Taiwan feel. (This
is my Taiwan impression - 純純的, 土土的.)And when the credits began to roll, the girl
sitting next to me said to her friend in mandarin, "好好看喔" (oh even in HK there are
mandarin speakers everywhere). And I agree with her.

I am glad that I've seen this film. Films like this make cinema-going worthwhile. Recommended.
