Thank you both. It works, a little bit overworks. All the "unread" s became the "read"s.

So I decide it should be used when I ready to log out after surfing.

Interracial marriage popular among overseas Chinese

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-18 08:54:42

Chinanews, Beijing, July 18 C Latest statistics reveal that young
generations of overseas Chinese prefer interracial marriages. However,
their parents feel difficult to accept their marriage.
When the first generation of Chinese immigrated to Australia, only
10%-20% of them chose to marry people of other cultures. While for the
second generation, this rate increased to 40%-50%, and the third
generation, nearly 70%.
A 2004 survey of interracial marriage in Canada shows that some 44
thousand couples are composed of the black and white, which was the most
popular kind of interracial marriage, and that more than 31 thousand
overseas Chinese have white husbands or wives, many of them from
Vancouver.
Parents of these overseas Chinese usually hold traditional Chinese views,
and are worried about their interracial marriages contradicting family
disciplines.
Qu Muqi, director of Chinese Family Services of Toronto, said Toronto was
now a melting pot; where different races and cultures were mixed and
developed together. But some traditional Chinese families in Toronto
still opposed their children's interracial marriages. He suggested these
parents should give guidance on interracial marriages to their children
early when they were still teenagers, for when they grew up and started
dating, they would paid no heed to advice from their parents.

Confucius descendants expected to exceed 3 mln

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-06 15:34:57

Chinanews, Jinan, July 6 C The Confucius Family Tree Book Revision
Association recently received more than 1.2 million registration forms
from around the world. President of the association Kong Deyong said
after they had collected all the registration forms, they would arrange,
confirm and edit all the information. The revised Confucius pedigree is
expected to be published in 2009. By then, a map about the distribution
of all Confucius descendants will also come out.
The Confucius (Kong Zi) family has lasted for 83 generations, or 2,500
years by now. Most of the Confucius family descendants live in Qufu,
Shandong Province, and some live in other provinces in China or abroad.
The total number of the Confucius family descendants is expected to
exceed 3 million.
Kong Deyong told hat information solicitation work started in March, 1999
and ended on December 31, 2005. So far, they have received 1.2 million
registration forms. This, when added with the 560,000 descendants filed
in the family tree book written during the period of the Republic of
China, brings the total number of Confucius descendants to 1.8 million or
more. Ours will surely become the largest family in the world, said
Kong.
A company recently contacted Kong Deyong saying that they were willing to
pay for a DNA test for the revision work. However, the offer was refused
by the association. Kong said that since the number of descendants is
huge, it was impractical to apply a DNA test to each and every one of
them. Besides, in the Confucius family, it is quite common for one branch
family to adopt the child of another branch. From the blood relations
point of view, they may no longer have close blood relations with each
other. However, in the pedigree book, they are all included as the real
descendants of the Confucius family. In this circumstance, DNA test will
become meaningless.

Shanghai the int'l metropolis is losing Chinese characteristics

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-26 14:41:22

Chinanews, Shanghai, June 26 - Gu Xiaoming, a professor at the department
of history in Fudan University, said that as an international metropolis
promoted by China, Shanghai has few Chinese characteristics. In the
process of striving to become an "oriental Manhattan" and "oriental
Broadway," the city is losing its own characteristics.
Splendid Shanghai is undoubtedly a wonderful city. From "oriental Paris"
in the early 20th century to the most developed cultural center in the
Chinese mainland, Shanghai is always China's fashion landmark. However,
it is "wonderful" but not "classic." From an involuntary colony in the
beginning to intentional hot spot afterwards, it seems that fashion in
Shanghai is accompanied by "westernization." It is westernization that
has brought Shanghai prosperity, but at the same time, it has deprived
Shanghai of its original oriental culture. As a result, some people opine
that Shanghai cannot be called an international metropolis because it
does not have a soul of its own under its beautiful copied-from-abroad
appearance.
Shanghai was a metropolis envied by the whole world in the early 20th
century. It was the center of the Far East region in terms of business,
trade, finance, culture and fashion and was therefore called the
"oriental Paris." Since reforms and opening-up, Shanghai has recovered
its great ambition and vows to become an international metropolis again
in the backdrop of rapid economic development on the mainland.
Nevertheless, at present, aspiring Shanghai is still miles away from an
international metropolis.
In Gu Xiaoming's opinion, a really international metropolis should first
have a showcase, namely, it ought to show the outside world China's
multifarious and diversified cultures and all sorts of Chinese ethnic
cultures should be found in Shanghai. An international metropolis should
heartily welcome traditional culture accumulated from real life. However,
Shanghai fails to do a satisfactory job in this aspect and even cannot be
compared with Beijing.
Gu said that when planning to build nine towns with foreign flavors, the
Shanghai municipal government chose western styles including Italy,
Germany, Britain and Canada but did not intend to build small towns with
Arabian, Iranian, Thai and South Korean features. This demonstrates that
Shanghai only target cultures of developed western countries and admire
those countries but does not open itself to international cultures which
are the real sediments of culture accumulated over the ages.

16 major steel companies object to price hike for iron ore

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-23 15:57:03

Chinanews, May 23 - China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) announced on
May 21 that it convened a meeting for the Iron Ore Import Working
Committee two days earlier and had called on the senior management of 16
major steel enterprises in China to gather in Beijing to attend the
meeting. Eventually the 16 major steel enterprises unanimously agreed
that they would resolutely object to enterprises which adopt measures in
contradiction to the rules of negotiation and apply pressure on Chinese
steel enterprises, and that they would not accept iron ore prices that
are fixed without any regards to the situation in the Chinese market.
It was learned that starting from May 15, Brazil-based Companhia Vale do
Rio Doce (CVRD), a representative of the suppliers in the global iron ore
negotiations, declared on several occasions that it had reached an
agreement with a few enterprises in Germany, Italy and Japan to raise
iron ore prices by 19% in 2006. On May 19, CISA held a meeting with the
senior management of 16 major steel enterprises to look into the import
of iron ore in 2006. The senior management of China's largest steel
enterprises such as Shanghai Baosteel Group Corporation, Wuhan Iron and
Steel (Group) Corp and Tangshan Iron and Steel (Group) Co. Ltd attended
the meeting.
CISA released a declaration on this conference on May 21, saying that to
date no Chinese or Japanese steel enterprises have expressed their stand
on the agreement reached by CVRD for a 19% price hike, which means that
the Asian market's iron ore price has not been fixed yet. The
negotiations for the 2006 iron ore price is still continuing, and Chinese
steel enterprises would not accept iron ore prices that are fixed without
any regards to the situation in the Chinese market.
CISA revealed that the 16 major enterprises have agreed that negotiations
for iron ore prices must take into account the long-term interests and
benefits of both suppliers and purchasers and pursue a win-win situation.
The fixing of the iron ore prices in 2006 should not only take into
account the European market but also the Asian market, particularly
China. In 2005, Chinese steel enterprises imported 275 million tons of
iron ore, accounting for about 43% of the world's total trading volume of
iron ore that is transported by sea.

CUP and Citibank launch ATM access for customers

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-10 15:59:08

Chinanews, Beijing, April 10 (by Liu Changzhong) C Holders of China
UnionPay (CUP) or the Citibank cards can use cash machines of both groups
as of April 9.
The two groups officially launched Automated Teller Machine (ATM) access
for customers of each other on Tuesday, CUP told China News Service. It
is the first time for CUP to expand such service with foreign-invested
banks.
The launch of the service would promote mutual benefit and reach a
win-win result for the two groups in the field of ATM service and provide
convenience for their customers as well. After the opening of the
service, CUP cardholders are allowed to withdraw cash from Citibanks
ATMs in around 36 countries and regions, while Citibank cardholders can
draw money from 8,300 ATMs linked to CUP's network.
It was a happy event for CUP to establish close cooperative relationship
with the Citibank, which has been in the lead in offering international
retail banking services, and the cooperation would better fulfill the
demand of cardholders during the expansion of CUPs overseas network
,said executive vice president Liu Yongchun of CUP.
Li Yawen, general manager of China division of international retail and
financing products and service of the Citibank, said that he expected the
further cooperation with CUP would be enhanced, that benefiting the

No pollution occurs in Songhua River

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-07 16:06:04

(Source: Xinhua)

Polluted water in Songhua River reaches Harbin, the capital of
northeastern Heilongjiang province November 24, 2005. [Reuters]

May 7 - The benzene-related pollutants in northeast China's Songhua and
Heilong rivers remain at a safe level during the spring thaw period,
China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) said
Saturday.
"The water quality in the Songhua and Heilong rivers is steady and no
pollution has occurred," read a statement from the SEPA.
The thaw period had finished, but the benzene, nitrobenzene and aniline
contents in the two rivers did not exceed the national standards of both
China and Russia, said the SEPA.
The Songhua River, a tributary of the Heilong River which is also called
Amur River in Russia, was heavily polluted last year after a chemical
plant explosion upstream on November 13, causing some 100 tons of
benzene-related pollutants to spill into the river and endangering the
water supply for millions of residents along the river.
Since then, Chinese environmental protection departments have been
closely monitoring the changes of water quality in the two rivers. China
and Russia have also conducted several joint monitoring exercises.
From March 4 to 22, the two sides took samples of water, ice and silt
from the different sections of Songhua River and found benzene-related
pollutants did not exceed the national standards of China and Russia,
according to the statement.
"At present, China and Russia are discussing how to enhance environmental
protection along the rivers bordering the two countries," said the
statement.
